Alternative for Germany finished far ahead in the September 6 Saxony-Anhalt state election, according to ARD projections. Tagesschau’s later report put AfD at 44 percent and the governing Christian Democratic Union at 17.8 percent. The original Stat Crux post cited an earlier projection of 44.4 percent for AfD and 18.4 percent for the CDU.

The projected AfD share is more than twice its 20.8 percent result in 2021. The CDU had won 37.1 percent that year. Tagesschau described the new projection as AfD’s strongest state-election result and a sharp reversal for the CDU.

These are projections, not certified final totals. The state election authority’s results portal still showed counting in progress when checked for this report. Percentages can change as additional polling districts report.

Finishing first does not automatically determine who governs. Tagesschau reported that AfD remained short of an outright seat majority in the projection. The final distribution of seats, smaller parties’ performance against the five-percent threshold and negotiations over a government remain important.
