U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner said the Israeli government was acting “a little irrational” in some matters involving Gaza as Israel approached a Knesset election, according to remarks reported by The Times of Israel.
Speaking during a September 6 press appearance in Kyiv, Kushner said the United States and Israel agreed on an intended end state for Gaza. He then attributed some differences to what he called Israel’s “crazy elections,” linking the political calendar to the government’s conduct.
The Times of Israel reported that Washington has been seeking to advance a Board of Peace plan that would pair the decommissioning of weapons held by Hamas and other armed groups with an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Israeli opposition has stalled that effort, according to the outlet.
Kushner’s characterization is his assessment of the Israeli government’s behavior; it is not an independently established finding. His remarks did not announce a completed agreement, an Israeli withdrawal timetable or the implementation of a Gaza demilitarization plan.
