President Donald Trump called Cuba an “absolutely failed state” and predicted that its communist government “will fall” during an address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. Cuba’s delegation walked out as Trump spoke, Reuters and other news organizations reported. A Stat Crux Report post published after the speech captured the remarks and the delegation’s exit.
Trump also used the address to defend the war with Iran, call for the country’s complete economic isolation and warn of further military action if there is no peace agreement. The Associated Press reported that he paired those threats with an indication that Washington remains open to negotiations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio separately said no meeting with Iranian representatives had been scheduled.
An earlier Stat Crux Report post previewed Trump’s appearance and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned Thursday address. Current schedules did not include a Trump-Netanyahu meeting: Israeli and U.S. officials cited by The Jerusalem Post said their New York visits were not expected to overlap. The two posts concern the same United Nations gathering and are covered together here rather than as duplicate stories.
