An armed individual lunged at Democratic Ohio gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, September 6, injuring several people, campaign officials told the Associated Press. Acton was not injured.
Mahoning County Democratic Party chairman Chris Anderson said the suspect knocked volunteers to the ground and was arrested with “multiple weapons.” Acton communications director Addie Bullock thanked law enforcement for its swift response and said the campaign was praying for those injured. Officials had not disclosed the number or severity of the injuries.
As of publication, authorities had not publicly released the suspect’s identity, a motive, details about the weapons or any charges. The Associated Press reported that fairground police referred questions to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department and that the Ohio State Highway Patrol had not immediately provided additional information. The original Stat Crux post included a photograph presented as the suspect, but this article does not identify the man because law enforcement confirmation was unavailable.
Acton is facing Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in the November election. Ramaswamy’s communications director called the incident unacceptable and said candidates should be able to meet voters without fearing violence. This report will be updated if law enforcement releases verified additional details.
