Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned that U.S. warships could be targeted as far from Iran as the Indian Ocean if Washington resumes attacks. The threat was reported after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and moving toward an end to the conflict.

The warning expands the geographic scope of Iran’s rhetoric beyond the Persian Gulf and nearby waterways, but it does not establish that an attack has occurred or that fighting has resumed. American naval forces operate across the wider Indian Ocean, while the conflict has already disrupted shipping and energy markets around the Strait of Hormuz.

Reuters reported that U.S. and Iranian officials were holding separate contacts with mediators over an amended ceasefire proposal. Iran’s plan included reopening the strait, easing sanctions and resuming nuclear talks; Washington said the proposal did not yet satisfy its demands.

Trump has publicly argued that Iran is under greater economic pressure and said the United States would prevail if diplomacy fails. Iran, meanwhile, has paired offers of negotiation with threats of wider retaliation. The competing statements leave talks active but the risk of renewed escalation unresolved.
