Canada’s latest counter-tariffs on U.S. goods take effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8, 2026. The measures impose rates of 15%, 25% and 50% on specified products, rather than a single 50% tariff on all affected imports.
The Department of Finance said the countermeasures cover C$27.6 billion in imports from the United States and respond to U.S. Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs. The listed sectors include steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics and electronics.
Individual products receive the rate assigned in Canada’s tariff schedule. Some steel and aluminum counter-tariffs rise from 25% to 50%, while other goods are set at 15% or 25%. U.S.-origin goods already in transit to Canada when the measures take effect are exempt.
Canada said the new rates match the corresponding U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar and rate for rate. Existing Canadian counter-tariffs on some U.S. goods, including automobiles, also remain in place.
